Severe Weather Notifications

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a tornado warning for Knox County on 12 June 2013.  The campus did not issue a UTAlert in accordance with our policy because the threat polygon did not include the main campus (see figure).  The campus monitors software provided by NWS to determine if a warning issued at the county level indicates a safety concern on campus.  A UTAlert issued for a tornado warning applies to all UT Knox Area employees.  For more information on what to do during a tornado warning visit the safety website.

The campus does not issue UTAlerts for severe weather warnings because the majority of campus activities are not adversely impacted.  Departments must determine the safety impact of weather on outdoor activities and adjust accordingly.
