UT changes to new Campus Safety App, Safe at UT

The University of Tennessee-Knoxville is updating to a new mobile phone safety app, Safe at UT, for the campus community.Safe at UT is an essential tool to enhance your personal safety while at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville Campus. The app will send important safety alerts and provide instant access to an array of safety resources. Users have convenient access to campus resources and services without having to search the internet for them.

“Anything from broken lights, safety hazards, public safety concerns, harassment or a troubled peer, the app will allow students, faculty, and staff to communicate a variety of concerns to the appropriate officials” said UT Emergency Management Director Brian Gard.

The app provides easy to use home buttons for a variety of campus services and resources including the Safety Toolbox, Mobile BlueLight, UT Police Department, Office of Title IX, Student Health Center, Counseling Center, Facilities Services, campus bus routes and other maps.

“Those are just a few of the functions the app offers, there is even a Chat with UTPD feature in the app, as well as a Friend Walk button,” said Gard. “Technology is constantly evolving and so is app development, this tool is one of those that helps keep things simple and easy to use for students.”

The apps Friend Walk feature allows users to share a walking or driving route with chosen contacts. Contacts can follow virtually on the map and are notified if the user activates an emergency call.

A geolocation feature lets the university target specific locations with messaging—for example, a game-day reminder of prohibited items in Neyland Stadium.

A version of the app for campus visitors provides them with a way to report incidents and access information on special events such as concerts and commencement.

The university’s former safety app, LiveSafe, will be phased out for individual users at the beginning of the Fall 2024 semester.
