Avoid the Flu and Reduce the Spread on Campus

Spread of the flu on college campuses where social gatherings, events, and academic life bring people together in close quarters is a genuine concern. We can help reduce the impact on our campus by being a smart community. Follow the advice of UT professor Paul Erwin, head of the Department of Public Health, to get vaccinated, wash your hands, and if you’re sick, stay home. The Student Health Center website provides detailed information to help you stay healthy, including how to avoid the flu:

  • The single most effective means of reducing your risk of obtaining and transmitting Influenza is to receive your annual flu vaccine.
  • You should wash your hands often with soap and warm water.
  • Cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
  • Wash your hands before eating.
  • Do not share your food, drink, or utensils with others.
  • Avoid close contact with sick people.
